Rethinking International Coverage from Europe

Prior to my work in Asia, I spent six years in Paris and Berlin experimenting with a “one-person news operation” approach at The Washington Post. My work focused on how to capture high‑stakes international stories with the speed of a modern digital newsroom.

The Berlin Model (2017–2020)

In Berlin, I expanded the use of rapid-response reporting, data-driven analysis, and visual enterprise stories during the overnight hours in Washington, D.C.

  • I developed an overnight approach that leveraged high-interest topics and then used them as entry points into deeply reported explainers and features examining structures of power, economics, culture, and everyday life.
  • Working with the social media team, I helped develop a WhatsApp & Messenger service focused on Europe, sharing behind-the-scenes reporting, answering questions and folding readers’ ideas back into my coverage.
  • Working closely with editors in D.C., I built a new format for fast, mobile-first digests timed to reach readers in the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand, surfacing distinctive angles on global stories.

Before The Post introduced breaking news hubs in Asia and Europe, the Berlin model demonstrated how a single reporter could bridge time zones and deliver high-impact coverage while the U.S. newsroom was offline. This focus on depth and speed contributed to measurable digital audience growth during this period. My stories consistently ranked among the most-read international coverage during this tenure.

The Paris Adaptation (2020–2023)

Building on the Berlin model, I later transitioned to Paris to lead coverage of France as a solo correspondent. In this role, I adapted the “one-person” approach to on-the-ground reporting, covering major political elections, environmental crises, and high-level investigative projects:

▶️ How Europe could change if Macron loses France’s presidency (2022)

▶️ How the war in Ukraine is reshaping the French presidential election (2022)

▶️ Dispatch: France is rioting over police shooting (2023)

▶️ Coronavirus researchers in Germany invited thousands to a concert. For science. (2020)

▶️ U.S. protesters are demanding police reform. Here’s what it could look like. (2020)
