I’m a multimedia correspondent who specializes in translating complex geopolitics into human-centered storytelling, tracing how wars, corporate power, and political shifts reshape everyday life.
More Than a Decade of Field Reporting
I thrive on opportunities to make fast-moving stories accessible to a global audience. Over nearly 12 years at The Washington Post, I evolved from a fellow and freelance contributor to leading high-risk coverage as bureau chief. My work has often been among the paper’s most widely read because it explains global geopolitics through unexpected angles—for example, covering the Taliban’s internal rifts by speaking with members of the group about the appeal of urban life in the wake of their takeover.
I have contributed to and led investigative projects examining the proliferation of U.S. weapons after the Afghanistan withdrawal, the legacy of Bagram Air Base, and corporate accountability as part of the cross-border “Uber Files” collaboration.
Before my most recent three-year tenure as The Washington Post‘s Kabul Bureau Chief, where I oversaw contributors in Kabul, Peshawar, and Islamabad, I served as the Post’s Paris Correspondent. In Berlin, I pioneered a ‘one-person news operation’ model, producing explanatory videos, graphics, and deep-dive features in the overnight D.C. hours.
Digital-First Storytelling
Whether I’m reporting on the legacy of the United States’ longest war or melting glaciers in Switzerland that reveal ancient artifacts, I’m eager to make use of all tools of modern storytelling to reach as many readers, viewers, and listeners as possible. I combine self-shot field reporting with graphics and data-driven analysis, and have appeared live on CNN, BBC World, NPR, and other broadcasters to discuss my reporting.
Academic Foundation
I started working as a journalist during my undergraduate years at Sciences Po Paris, where I earned a bachelor’s degree, and later as an Aitchison Public Service Fellow at Johns Hopkins University in Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. In 2017, I earned a Master’s degree with distinction in “Terrorism, Security & Society” from King’s College London.

My reporting from Afghanistan was most recently recognized with a National Headliner Award for international news and the SAJA Journalism Award.
I’m a native German speaker, near-native English speaker, and fluent in French.
